Every Saturday, locals — myself included — gather at the intersection of Carillo and State Street to enjoy the vibrant farmers’ market. From 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., hundreds of people fill these four blocks, browsing stalls filled with freshly made pasta, sipping on strawberry juice, listening to live music, and even watching magic shows. Since discovering this market, it has become my Saturday morning ritual that I look forward to each week. When my roommates and I stop by, we always try to pick something new to experiment with in our cooking.

Arriving with an empty stomach is highly encouraged — vendors offer generous samples, from blood orange slices to spoonfuls of rich maple almond butter. For college students who receive Calfresh benefits, the Santa Barbara Farmers’ Market provides an added bonus: they will match up to $15 in fruits and vegetables for any amount spent using an EBT card. Simply visit the merchandise stand, withdraw the desired amount from your card, and the cashiers will provide extra market coins to spend.

If you happen to be busy on Saturday morning, you can still enjoy a similar experience at the farmers’ market that takes place at Camino Real Marketplace every Sunday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
