Autumn is a time for wild weather, a vastly changing environment, and many notable shifts in UC Santa Barbara (UCSB) students’ relationship status. With that said, here are five of the best hits to play into any of your resulting fall feels.
- “I Wanna Be Yours” by Arctic Monkeys
This catchy hit from Arctic Monkeys’ 2013 album “AM” perfectly blends the calm atmosphere of gloomy weather with the deep emotions experienced by any love-struck individual. The slow and steady beats embody the sense of constancy found in the persistent drape of fog which blankets our lovely campus during the fall months. At the same time, the passion in Alex Turner’s vocals and the rather poetic meaning of its lyrics highlight the devotion that comes with any new love. Such profound feelings are clearly portrayed by Turner’s mentions of wanting to hold his lover “in deep devotion … as deep as the Pacific Ocean” itself. The rhythm and lyrical styling of this song make it a wonderful representation of the weather and of the prospects of new romance that some may “fall” into.
- “we fell in love in october” by girl in red
The heartwarming and comforting vibes of this single fantastically channel the sense of peace and joy found in the downpour of an autumn storm passing over the streets of Isla Vista or the vastness of the sandy shores of the beaches we all know and love. The quiet landscape evokes the bliss of a happy couple. The glee and excitement of singer Marie Ulven Ringheim melts into the more upbeat nature of its stunning acoustics, playing into the euphoria of a budding romance. The song’s repetitive lyrics illustrate the unchanging nature of fall showers and the sense of security they create within students’ lives.
- “Fortnight (feat. Post Malone)” by Taylor Swift
A feature from Taylor Swift’s most recent album “The Tortured Poets Department” makes a superb addition to this list, adding another layer to the romance of the previous song. The song expertly highlights the downtrodden emotions that parallel the changing color of autumn leaves and denotes the end of a fleeting moment of passion. It also highlights the suffering brought on by the deteriorating state of any romantic flings. With the rather muted tones of its slowed rhythm and the striking sadness of its stirring harmonies, the song portrays the pained feelings that can result from any significant change, making it an exceptional alternative for those feeling a bit down in the dumps during the fall season.
- “Talking to the Moon” by Bruno Mars
This moving song from Bruno Mars’ 2010 album “Doo-Wops and Hooligans” is another great pick as it also brilliantly describes the less joyous fall vibes. The song represents feelings of loss and yearning brought on not only by the passing of summer, but the ending of a relationship and the sense of companionship it may have brought. The unceasing piano melody mirrors the almost unending cold snaps which plague UCSB during the fall season. Moreover, lyrics such as its namesake symbolize the loneliness and desperation fueled by the conclusion of a romance. With these elements it’s the perfect choice for the playlists of any Gauchos left wanting this time of year.
- “Come as You Are” by Nirvana
The song in question from Nirvana’s 1992 album “Nevermind” is also a fantastic pick for this gloomy time of year, since its minor key plays into the general sense of mystery or depth often associated with the gray clouds. Kurt Cobain’s rather low and deep vocals add an even greater sense of ambiguity to the tone through the unease they create. The lyrics as well as the title itself seem to encourage acceptance, claiming that it is better to be yourself and be alone than to foster a relationship based on falsehood. This rather emotive track is a phenomenal song selection for anyone who’s come around to embracing the intrigue of the gloomy seasonal forecast and finding closure for any past love affairs.
