Photo Essay by Sarah Fishman

Isla Vista is characterized by both movement and stillness: it is full of fast-paced life, but has a warmth and a charm to it that almost makes you feel frozen in time. In this photo essay, I wanted to capture the innovative ways that students decorate their spaces, and how the personality of our homes combines with natural elements to create a special blend of energy and serenity. These photos include dynamic movement—of shapes, shadows, flames, sun, rain, and more — but also convey a distinct quality of comfort.
A tired tuxedo cat takes an evening nap on a lofted bed, surrounded by blankets and shadows.
Bright white flower string lights twirl around a lamp against the backdrop of an Isla Vista sunset.
Candles, mugs, and remotes litter a wooden coffee table with a green glass centerpiece.
Raindrops cling to a balcony railing overlooking a stormy sky and soaked streets, as a person passes in the background.
A Valentine’s themed coffee table with a bouquet of roses, red petals, champagne, a crochet floral arrangement, and a nearly-empty bucket of red lollipops.
Plants homed in recycled laboratory beakers line a windowsill under rays of sunlight.
Little wax bears sit around a campfire flame among little wax trees, inside a uniquely designed candle.
