Outlaw(ed) Intellectuals: Critiquing Structures of Power

Formally incarcerated students, scholars, activists, and healers held a conference last week to discuss the impacts of incarceration and higher education. Such topics included reintegration and reentry into society as a returning citizen and intersectionality and the Abolitionist Movement. Among the speakers and organizers were Davíd Maldonado, a third-year Ph.D. student in the Education Department at UC Berkeley whose research challenges respectability politics amongst formerly incarcerated groups and the “violence of value.” UC Berkeley graduate, Clint Terrell is in his first year as a Ph.D. student at UCSB, studying English literature.
