Santa Barbara County Sheriff Kelly Hoover sent out a follow-up press release at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday stating that additional human remains were found on the shoreline at Campus Point around 9:00 a.m.
The new remains were a femur, fibula, and tibia. They are “suspected to be associated with” the human remains — a head and torso — discovered in the ocean two days earlier on July 24.
Further progress has been made into the identity of the remains. Preliminary dental record comparisons rule out the body belonging to Jack Cantin, a missing 17-year-old victim from the Montecito mudslide, according to Hoover in the press release.
The Sheriff’s Office and the Department of Justice are working together to gather DNA evidence to compare to missing persons in the Tri-County area.
Initial information
On the evening of July 24, Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Deputies and UCSB Police Officers confirmed the discovery of “human remains” in the ocean off the beach access at Camino Pescadero Park in Isla Vista, according to a press release by Lieutenant Kevin Huddle.
The remains were recovered with the assistance of the Santa Barbara County Fire water rescue. However, the human remains are still “incomplete” and, due to the “significant state of decomposition,” the individual’s age, sex, and identity have yet to be determined.
“There were no indications of foul play,” said Huddle in the press release.
The Santa Barbara County Coroner’s Office is still investigating the identity of the remains, as well as the cause of death.
More updates will be added as they become available.
