Alan Anhphi Vu, an Isla Vista resident and UCSB employee, was killed in a car accident on Highway 101 early Saturday morning, according to Santa Barbara Sheriff’s Office public information officer Kelly Hoover, Vu was 28.

Vu served as an undergraduate adviser for UCSB’s History Department and sat on the Asian Pacific Islander Alliance Executive Board. He was the 2017 APIA co-chair and previously worked as an admissions counselor and undergraduate programs assistant in other departments on campus.

Hoover told The Bottom Line that the cause of the collision is still under investigation by the California Highway Patrol. The Sheriff’s Coroner’s Office is also investigating the cause and manner of death, pending lab and toxicology results.

UCSB colleagues are planning memorials this week to commemorate Vu’s life. On Wednesday, history department chair Sharon Farmer will host a Valentine’s Day appreciation event in HSSB 4211/4213. The undergraduate education office is also collecting cash donations for Vu’s memorial services in Cheadle Hall 1117.

Information regarding funeral and memorial services was not publicly available at press time.

A luncheon in Vu’s honor will be held on Feb. 28 in HSSB 4020.
