The multi-activity court (MAC) at the UCSB Recreation Center will serve as an evacuation shelter for those displaced from their homes by the Thomas Fire, a county representative said Tuesday.

The Thomas Fire has burned in parts of Ventura County and the Ojai Valley since Monday, blazing over 50,000 acres and resulting in at least one fatality at the time of this post. Thousands in Ventura County have left their homes due to calls for mandatory evacuation.

An additional evacuation shelter has been set up at the MAC “at the request” of Ventura County, said County of Santa Barbara Communications Manager Gina DePinto in an email sent out Tuesday afternoon.

The MAC sits near the back of the UCSB Rec Cen complex and serves as a court for a number of sports, including basketball, roller hockey and indoor soccer. The full address for the MAC, which the county provided to evacuees, is the following:

516 Ocean Rd, Santa Barbara, CA 93106

  1. Are donations currently being accepted similar to Ventura fair grounds? Where any clothes, blankets, sheets, food, water, and so on is needed?
    Thanks!
