CAMPUS

A new Transfer Student Center is now open in the Davidson Library. The new space offers academic advising with two full-time academic counselors, career counseling workshops and other resources tailored to address the unique needs of transfer students on campus.

Official campaign season has begun for the 2016 Associated Students Elections as of Sunday, April 10, and will continue through student voting from April 18 to 21. Candidate forums for executive offices kicked off Monday and continued yesterday, with several senator forums still slated for later today in the University Center Hub.

The Associated Students Food Bank celebrated its fifth anniversary on Monday, April 11. Participants and staff members posed for photos with Instagram frames in front of the University Center, while food bank patrons enjoyed special food items from the Isla Vista Food Cooperative. The Food Bank will be open Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. during spring quarter.

ISLA VISTA

Local firefighters carried out a technical rescue at the 6600 block of Del Playa Drive around midnight Saturday, after a man in his early 20s fell an estimated 35 to 40 feet from the adjacent cliff during high tide. The victim — who sustained moderate injuries — was hoisted to shore in a basket and transported to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital.

The long-discussed Isla Vista Community Services District will appear as a ballot measure this November per last week’s approval by the Santa Barbara County Local Agency Formation Commission, better known as LAFCO. The district’s formation hinges on approval of an eight percent utility-user tax, which will require a two-thirds vote among Isla Vista residents for approval.

CALIFORNIA

One week after approving a $15-per-hour state minimum wage, Gov. Jerry Brown signed additional legislation to expand California’s Paid Family Leave program. Assembly Bill 908, signed Monday, raises wage replacements from 55 percent to either 60 or 70 percent — depending on income — and eliminates a former one-week waiting period on new child or sick family claims.
