For those Isla Vista loyalists who just can’t get enough, there is now a chance to become an expert on some of the more historical moments of this beloved place, aside from nightly drunken brawls in the streets and tirades with police. During spring quarter an “Isla Vista History” course will be offered on Monday and Wednesday from 2-3:15. It is 4 units and Pass/No Pass grading with guest speakers throughout the quarter.
Liz Buda, a member of Chilla Vista, initiated the idea and will facilitate the course. It is a Chilla Vista tradition to offer a class every spring that upholds the defining principle of what is truly Chilla Vista; a celebration of all things Isla Vista.
She felt it was time for residents of Isla Vista to have some grasp of the history beyond the bubble of student life “The current knowledge base of IV is surprisingly incomplete in relation to the richness of its history. The goal of this class is to expand this knowledge base, and make it more accessible and interesting to Isla Vistans,” said Buda.
The aim is for participants to produce a pamphlet and set up a website providing information on all things Isla Vista, past and present, thus providing an accessible resource to uninformed Isla Vistans. The group will also be expected to organize a creative presentation for the Chilla Vista festival on Saturday, May 31.
Buda designed the course in collaboration with her faculty advisor Dick Flacks through the Education for Sustainable Living Program (ESLP), which gives students the opportunity to organize a course on significant local issues that are meaningful to them.
Dick Flacks, a sociology professor, and has written extensively about the sixties and the influence this decade has in contemporary affairs. His research interests lie with social movements and student culture (the New Left), so if you consider yourself an active and aware member of the Isla Vista community in the present, this may be the perfect opportunity to familiarize yourself with its past.
