The Associated Students Senate re-passed all legislation that was passed with a margin of two votes during winter quarter. Because former Off-Campus Sen. Natalie Jordan’s Senate eligibility expired during winter quarter, the Senate revoted on all legislation that her proxy previously voted on. The Senate did not vote to put the Safety in Isla Vista ballot initiative on the spring 2016 A.S. elections ballot.
University of California, Santa Barbara is holding the first UCSB Give Day, a 24-hour digital donation drive, on Fri., Apr. 8. The UCSB Foundation hopes to increase the number of new donors by 30 percent, reaching out to younger alumni (as 45 percent of Gaucho alumni graduated after 2000) via social media platforms.
The fourth annual University of California, Santa Barbara Graduate Division’s Grad Slam competition will be held Apr. 4-15. In this campus-wide competition, 86 UCSB graduate students will compose and give a three minute presentation on their research, competing for $20,500 in prizes and a seat at the UC-wide competition to be held at the LinkedIn offices in San Francisco on Fri., Apr. 22.
ISLA VISTA
An otherwise sunny Deltopia came to a close when an electrical-vault fire broke out in front of Isla Vista Market at approximately 6:05 p.m. on Sat., Apr. 2. Edison turned off power in the immediate surrounding areas of eastern Isla Vista between 6:45 p.m. and 10 p.m. while repairs were made. No injuries were reported.
Deltopia 2016, held on Sat., Apr. 2, attracted smaller crowds and less crime than the festivities of previous years, with only 3,500 attendees, 45 arrests and 48 citations by 8 p.m. that night, according to the Santa Barbara County’s Sheriff Department. Comparatively, Deltopia 2015 attracted approximately 10,000 and resulted in over 100 arrests and 140 citations by 11 p.m. Preliminary estimates say that 10 people had to be medically transported to area hospitals.
LOCAL & STATE
Lieutenant Kevin Huddle has been named the new police chief of Goleta by the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Department. As an 18-year veteran of the SB County Sheriff’s Department, Huddle will replace Lieutenant Butch Arnoldi, who will move into the criminal investigations division after five years of service as Goleta police chief.
