At approximately 7:00 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 22, an unidentified suspect brandished a meat cleaver and was verbally aggressive toward AFSCME 3299 protesters as they marched by Portola Dining Commons. No one was injured during this incident.

“Some of the workers that were with us started telling us students to back up and at first,” said AFSCME intern and United Student Labor Action Coalition (USLAC) member Ana Fabian. “I wasn’t sure why, but then as he left I realized what he was carrying.”

Erick Ceballos, another AFSCME 3299 intern, recorded and took photographs of the suspect; an Asian male wearing glasses.

The UCSB Police were subsequently called to the scene, conducting a search of the San Joaquin dorms as the students and workers left.

According to Lisa Murphy at the UCSB Police Department Records, an incident report was filed and Judicial Affairs notified, however no one amongst the group of protesters desired prosecution.
