U.S. News and World Report recently ranked the University of California, Santa Barbara, along with several other UC campuses, among the nation’s top graduate programs. Nearly all UC graduate programs were ranked in each discipline, the University of California reports. The UCSB Gevirtz College of Education was ranked 52nd and the College of Engineering was ranked 19th.
The recently built 61-bed UCSB housing development at the corner of Camino Pescadero and El Colegio Rd. is now occupied by visiting scholars studying and working in the UCSB Kavli Institute for Theoretical Physics, Noozhawk reported on Monday. After almost two years of construction, workers recently completed the three-story residence. The building is intended for the researchers who attend the institute’s annual programs funded by the National Science Foundation. Physics enthusiast Charles Munger, whose grandson attended UCSB, donated $65 million in Berkshire Hathaway stock to fund the housing construction.

UCPD and Santa Barbara Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a report of a sexual assault that occurred on the 6700 block of Del Playa Dr. in Isla Vista last Saturday at approximately 5:00 a.m. A resident called 911 to report that she was awoken by an unknown suspect — described as a “Hispanic male adult in his 30s wearing a gray-colored sweatshirt” — fondling her as she was sleeping in her bed. When the victim confronted him, he fled the scene. The investigation revealed that the suspect most likely entered the victim’s residence through a bedroom window. Anyone with information regarding the incident is encouraged to contact the County Sheriff’s Department.

The abortion pill would be accessible at nearly every public California college under a bill introduced at last Friday’s state senate, the San Francisco Chronicle reports. The bill was introduced in response to attempts to cut funding for Planned Parenthood, which provides sexual and reproductive healthcare services, including the abortion pill. The medication includes two pills taken orally — one terminates the pregnancy and the other causes the dilation of the cervix — and can be used within 10 weeks of a woman’s last period. This would be the nation’s first availability of abortion services on college campuses.
