The University Art Museum will debut well-known British filmmaker Isaac Julien’s latest work, a film installation entitled Fant me Afrique on Thursday, February 28. Julien will give a special lecture at 4:00 pm, followed by a reception from 5-7pm, and the exhibition runs from February 28th to May 11th.

Fant me Afrique focuses on Julien’s documentation of West Africa as a diverse cultural space, starring choreographer and Ballet Frankfurt dancer Stephen Galloway, as well as Vanessa Myrie. It plays on encounters between local and global cultures and takes place in the capital of Ouagadougou. Julien took his cast and crew to shoot in Burkina Faso and incorporated footage to capture the essence of its architecture, urbanism and dance, while using film histories from parts of the world.

Julien got his start at the St. Martin’s School of Art studying fine art films as well as painting, where he graduated in 1984. He has been awarded with several accolades, such as the Pratt and Whitney Canada Grand Prize for 1996s Frantz Fanon: Black Skin, White Mask and Semaine de la Critique prize at the Cannes Film Festival for 1991s Young Soul Rebels.

Julien’s artistic visions are experienced by millions in museums and private collections around the world, such as the Guggenheim Museum, the Government Art Collection, and the Centre Pompidou. He recently showed an exhibition on Derek Jarman on Saturday, February 23 at the Serpentine Gallery in London, England. In addition, Julien finished an upcoming biopic on Jarman starring this year’s Academy Award winner, Tilda Swinton.
